Happiness is connected with good sleep!

“Happiness consists of getting enough sleep. Just that, nothing more.”

Robert A. Heinlein

A good night’s sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep is never a joke! Humans need proper sleep to maintain their functions and good health, simultaneously an overall sense of happiness and well-being.

What is meant by the term sleep?

“Once the sun sets, the cortisol level drops and your body starts producing melatonin, another hormone which induces sleep. This cortisol-melatonin cycle decides your day and night and you can consider this as your rhythm of life.”

Sleep benefits both mental and physical health. It is factual that an exhausted person never makes a happy person. A person who wakes fresh and early after a quality sleep wakes with energy physically and mentally to keep the whole day productive.

However, it’s a human tendency to cut shuteye as life is a “busy traveler” even though it’s aware that bodily functions and mood affect when tired.

According to a modern study by the University of Binghamton, people are more likely to experience repetitive negative thoughts when they sleep less. An average person ought to sleep between 6 to 7 hours.

But the quality of sleep is determined in addition to the amount of sleep. The factors affecting the quality of sleep are:

  • Irregular sleep schedule
  • Sleeping environment
  • Drinking too much caffeine or alcohol
  • Drugs
  • Snoring
  • Sleep disorders
  • Mental health disorders

Create a sleep-friendly atmosphere, standard daytime habits, and other sleep strategies to ensure sleep quality. It is never beneficial if a person gets more than enough sleep but compromises the quality of sleep.

Happiness and good sleep

What is happiness?

Happiness is a state of being happy. It is determined individualistically by an individual’s perception, which varies from one another. Happiness equals life satisfaction which means a good life.

To have a good life, people shove sleep, thinking it is less urgent, and prioritize the rest like a job or money over it.

“It is a fun fact that humans are the only species on the planet who deprives themselves of sleep.”

However, studies show that daily time spent on sleep relates to happiness and life satisfaction. Good sleep affects how a person self-evaluates to have a more positive general outlook on life and not only restores the body but helps improve the mindset, the foundation of life satisfaction and happiness.

It is appropriate to evaluate how good sleep benefits happiness and life satisfaction on medical terms.

  • The brain’s emotional center, the amygdala triggers primitive fights or feelings like fear, stress, or anger management. While relaxing, the prefrontal cortex keeps it in check so that feelings are better processed and produce healthy and balanced responses. This connection between the amygdala and prefrontal cortex is interrupted when sleep is insufficient.
  • When awake, brain neurons produce adenosine which builds drowsiness. When avoiding sleep, the brain does not get a chance to rejuvenate; and leaves the person drowsy!
  • Consistent deep sleep enables healthy brain structure and function, but poor sleep can harm brain tissues.
  • Less sleep havoc on the skin, and ages it prematurely, which usually disturbs the peace of mind, especially in women.

It is a matter of debate whether people who sleep more are happier or the happiest people sleep more! Yet, people who sleep enough are healthier and possess greater happiness.

Prioritizing sleep benefits the brain keeps up the functioning of genes, helps to control pain better and tackle troubles easily, look younger, improves relationships, and lets you live longer.

Hence the entire physical and mental metabolism ruptures when happiness diminishes due to a lack of proper sleep.
